Arnold uses good camera shots and angles to develop social realism and Zoe's character in the film. We can see this from the very first shot, when we are greeted with Zoe and her kids feet walking down some stairs in a council flat. This right of the bat tells us that the family is living in poverty, as they do not have shoes. The shots are also handheld and shaky which makes us as the audience believe we are actually there with the family walking through this run-down estate, adding to the social realism of the scene. The shaky shots also add a sense of turbulence to the scenes, allowing the audience to feel like we're really  there, as the shakiness makes the film feel chaotic. Usually in a film you might expect a family to be together holding hands throughout, showing their love for each other, however this is not the case in Wasp. The first sequence shows us Zoe walking down the stairs with a baby in one hand, and her daughter just behind her. The shot then switches to another daughter of Zoe's, walking down the stairs further up. The fact that the family aren't together gives us the idea that they are dysfunctional and divided, as they are going down the stairs separately. This helps us feel what living with a divided family feels like, and adds a sense of social realism to the film, and also gives us an idea about how stressed Zoe may be.

The mise-en-scene of the film also provides the audience an insight into the reality of Zoe and her children's situation. We can see this from the start as Zoe has a violent altercation with another mum down the road. Through this, the viewers may realise Zoe isn't the best parent. This really adds to the sense of Social Realism as fights may be something typical of a deprived area. The fact Zoe chooses violence but also stands up for her kids also shows us what kind of a character she is. The fact that Arnold uses a real run down dilapidated council estate, much like the ones we would see in real life, shows us that the social realism is very apparent and helps highlight the truth and reality of Zoe's life. The baby's clothes are ragged and ripped, and the baby doesn't even have anything to wear, just a nappy. This once again shows us the deprivation and poverty the family are in.
